The Seacoast Jazz Society has announced the next session in its ongoing Seacoast Jazz Appreciation Project (SJAP), and its featured artist is the Chicago-based bassist/composer and bandleader Matt Ulery. This free-to-the-public session is scheduled for Sunday, March 26, at 4:30 pm at The Press Room in Portsmouth and will feature a combination of performance and audience dialog with Mr. Ulery and his bandmates.
Joining the bassist on the bandstand will be trumpeter Chris Klaxton, reeds man Gideon Forbes, pianist Eunjeong “EJ” Hwang , and drummer Lee Fish. Following the SJAP session, the band will perform from 6 to 9 pm, the latter performance subject to The Press Room’s normal cover charge.
Matt Ulery, known for his instantly recognizable sound, has drawn praise for his sweeping lyricism, unconventional phrase structures, and expressionistic emotionalism. Ulery’s music, from small, diverse chamber ensembles to full orchestras, is informed by the entire spectrum of jazz, classical, rock, pop, and folk—specifically American, South American, Balkan, and other European folk styles. He has been performing for 20 years on upright, electric, and brass basses and, for the past decade has been the leader of his own groups and a frequent collaborator.
The Seacoast Jazz Appreciation Project was launched in 2009 with an objective of enhancing the appreciation of jazz for listeners at all levels of musical sophistication, while de-mystifying this uniquely American musical genre for its newest listeners. It’s a chance to “hang” with some outstanding jazz musicians, to hear their music, and about their music, in a casual, club-like environment.
